The Underbelly of Society

Some things make you sit up and realise what's going on around you. And there's little you can do about it.

We all know that life isn't a fairytale. Things happen and at the back of your mind you know it goes on around you. But nevertheless we all fall into that ignorance is bliss groove, and when something comes along that reminds you that the world, country and town in which you live is a far from a perfect place to be, it can surprise and sadden you. In this particular instance I'm talking about drugs, most likely class-A.

To briefly set the scene our office is located on the 2nd floor (3rd by US standards) in a relatively well known office complex that shall remain nameless because it sucks. A glance out the window would see you looking over the local marketplace where townsfolk trade everything from aging electronics equipment to fruit and vege, and to your left the local post office and the street recently used by the Queen on her visit (friendly old dear with a really nice custom-built Bently).

Also in direct view are the local public toilets, which seem to attract more of society's scum than an off-license on dole day.

A couple of days ago we recently saw four people - two blokes and two women all walk into the gents toilet. Somewhat odd you'd agree. Me 'n the fellas in the office had a laugh at what sordid sexual act they must be up to; until around 20 minutes later when all but one of them stagger out looking, well, rather unwell. Pale, unsteady, clearly out of it and rubbing their noses feverishly, which probably gives you an idea as to their activities. Don't even know what happened to the other guy. Now I don't like drug use and I never have. I feel it changes personalities and ruins lives. But if folks want to use it in their own home then that's their prerogatived. However seeing that type of stuff in plain sight, the middle of the day and especially comparing their before/after appearance..

It just makes you realise that to much of a degree we live in a society that's nothing more than a thinly-veiled illusion of the truth. The truth is that as a culture we've got some real problems, and it's such a shame we cannot sort 'em out.

Nevertheless I'm not going to bare on it. We shape our own lives, and should make the most of them while they're here. Life passes by far too quickly to waste.

I completely agree that what people do in the privacy of their own homes is their business. My personal gripe is smoking. Everyday i have to walk through clouds of cancerous smoke just to get to the door to my apt. Yay for me. Sadly, most people's response is that i should move...and to that i say f*ck off and get away from my door (which...technically it is seeing as i pay to live there).

On a side note, one night some twit and her friend were standing in front of the door leading up to the apt. Well, the friend saw us coming and was smart enough to get out of the way so we could open the door (hands were full of groceries). The twit was too busy lighting up though she did look up and see us. She didn't move so i took pleasure in trapping her behind the door (it was a tight fit im sure) while i held the door open for my girlfriend and then took my time going in.

All i saw was her behind this mostly glass with metal framing door while her friend just kind of smirked...not sure what the point of my little rant is, but it gave me a good laugh that night

Your right, we do have problems in our society with drugs and antisocial behavior and stuff. I also agree with the last poster that smoking is really irritating and quite inconsiderate of people. Not to mention the littering caused by the butts.
